Serbian Orthodox Church won’t participate in Pan-Orthodox Council, urges postponement
The Serbian Orthodox Church has refused to participate in the Pan-Orthodox Council in Crete, Patriarch Irinej of Serbia said on Thursday. The church urged postponement of the Council, citing „difficulties” for the participation in the event, RIA Novosti reports. Last week, the Bulgarian Orthodox Church refused to attend the gathering due to „differences over the agenda.” The Synod of the Constantinople Patriarchate on June 6 decided to go ahead with preparations for the Pan-Orthodox Council, to bring the leaders of all Orthodox churches together for the first time in more than a millennium. Following the statement from Bulgaria, the Russian Orthodox Church suggested holding an urgent pan-Orthodox consultative conference by June 10, TASS reported.
